Hayfields
The
buzz of flies the crunch of stubble,
The
toasted browns the tractors rumble,
The
Hay bales wrapped around
afield,
What’s
left to glean gives
nought to yield,
A
scene of plenty - work complete,
The
blistered hands the aching feet,
Now rolling
hills a sweeping view,
The
scene is set for autumn dew,
Walk
far beyond the border hedge,
Trace
deep within the
honoured pledge,
To
work the land and here and now,
These
Norfolk hayfields burn and plough.
